cigar haven

after a coupe of months of not having my baby by my side I had the urge to smoke again worst still as I’m still too lazy to wake up early enough to pick up some decent CAO petite cigars (as they would put it) but none the less having a cigar shop next to my work place is like having a candy store next to this ex-smoker where all stress was resolved by smoking (before I met my baby) does not help.

Her absence has truly challenged me but finally after having a long slow day of endless short comings;  gave in. I ran over next door and picked up a Montecristo Open Eagle. A fine well balance medium bodied cigar with lots of beautiful cedars and a light hint of berries. Though I may have to say… having a perfect pint of “black on black” does not help with the clarity of taste yet I do say I am not wrong when I blog to you now that this simple cigar has truely awaken my taste buds.

The irony of it all…. Guinness black on black goes down too well with it (hence the non-stop rambling) and Maggie noodles in a cup (chicken flavoured) taste pretty good and it cleanses my palate just enough for me to take another good draw from this cigar.

Two thumbs up for Montecristo!

Sorry baby I know how much you hate smoking….

starbucks caramel macchiato

unlike most couples. Baby and I spend quite a lot of time at Starbucks. So much so that the barista barely have to ask for our orders. It’s almost always the same. Caramel machiato grande or venti with two extra shots of espresso and extra caramel drizzle.

I now finally understand why Suki have been so insanely in love with this drink ever since it was introduced to the Malaysian market.

To make things worst almost a good lot of em’ starbucks crew recognize us regardless of where we go. Talk about having too much of a good thing. It been so long that since we last have a good caramel macchiato that a craving is building within me for the sweet smooth beverage reminding me of how much I miss my baby….

tumbled to Al Marjan

It is rare to find a relatively good Middle Eastern restaurant here in KL, let alone one that you might think it’s worth the while to put a dent in your pocket. On the first anniversary in Feb, Baby and I had a spontaneous road trip, one that the traffic jam and my blunder somehow got us to KLCC. Having promised her a meal at a restaurant that I’ve raved about for ages, I felt the occasion called for it.

Lunch at Al Marjan. As usual the staff and management were quick to greet us and introduce the specials; little did I know that they were having a lunch buffet. Somewhat confused and disappointed, the manager proposed that we tryout their buffet and offered a discount for baby having known that it her first time there. Aww… so sweet. Thumb up for em’.

Lost in the array of colourful food; Baby and I went wide eye drooling over the great spread of goodies but how can I overlook the yummy hummus that was just calling my name. Needless to say I was happily taking spoonfuls of hummus and all the other spreads of starters that resembled it from the capsicum to eggplant and salads of cucumber and tomatoes all gleaming fresh in it’s dressing.

We then moved on to to mains (not before two trip to the hummus and that capsicum hummus like thing). A healthy fair all but one thing; mutton! Al Marjan’s specialty. Unfortunately baby who does not take lamb bowed out from the dishes and how could I eat them in front of her and smell of lamb throughout the whole day. No lamb it is I guess…. well it all turn out just fine.

Like any other food adventure this was no exception. We had our eyes on the dessert the moment we step foot into the restaurant. As a sweet tooth I couldn’t pass on the opportunity to have something new. Of course like any other meal that I would have ending the day or moment with a cup of coffee is a tradition that I would not break. Al Marjan’s coffee is unique without a doubt. I’ll let the pictures do the talking

the green thing

what do you call a drink that surprises your palate and give birth to exhilaration and fun?! It’s layers of liquid of striking colours; green, golden yellow and crystal clear liquid both entice and intimidates your every being?!

A question well asked and unfortunately my poor drink has to succumb to a makeshift name that seems to be quite permanent now. ”The Green Thing” This is surely a sign that is telling me to get off my butt and give it a better name and no “The hulk” is taken.

Beside the green thing there’s the “Black Thing” and “The thing thing” So baby please help me name my drinks already…. :(

silver tequila

just last night two colleague of mine from the same trade came by with some silver tequila and surprised me. The idea of drinking silver tequila somehow reminded me of dirty sad men in lil bars outside of mexico drowning their sorrows and squinting their eyes as the silver liquid burns their throat. I’m sure with that image burned into your mind, you too would have been reluctant as I was. Since my baby wasn’t around and I’ve been looking to drown my sorrows, I saw this as an invitation. I slowly tasted the drink neat, slowly as to allow the flavours and alcohol take it’s course.

To my surprise and some dismay (of wanting to get sloshed) the Jose Quervo Silver tequila was smooth with evident classic flavours of agave pleasant to the nose and burnt very little if not none at all. The distinct tropical fruit mouth feel of sugared pineapple was even present without much effort. Ryan then prepared it with cranberry and lime and another with ginger ale and orange slice. The idea was alien to us to have tequila mixed in such a way but why not since it was a free tasting…. can’t complain about that right. So down the hatch it went.

Jose Quervo silver tequila with cranberry juice and lime is without doubt a winner in my books with beautiful buttery smoothness to the texture and accentuated brilliance of the cranberry, as for the ginger ale it would be what most men would want in a drink; the original flavours of the liqueur in your mouth and the mild sweetness of ale brought in by the slice of orange. All in all it was a drink that made my day.

Perhaps baby when you come home to me we can get silly again like the last party but this time with Jose Quervo’s silver tequila hehehehehe……

sassorosso

People have always wondered how far baby and I can go in this relationship of ours, all things considered. A relationship that is full of challenges from a personal professional, and society itself have been a challenge. Our age difference doesn’t help as well; yet here we are celebrating our 1st year anniversary at a small post modern Italian restaurant in the heart of the city called Sassorosso.

Baby made great effort surfing the net to find the right place and somehow landed on this place. Secretive as ever she only tells me that it’s near Market Place and nothing else. With barely any effort on my side, we reached the place relatively early and yes we were the early birds.

Like any other fine dine restaurant, a sommelier presented us with their wine and food menu. I have to say that they have an interesting selection of wine and food. Choices that are familiar yet intriguing to those who love Italian cuisine. We started our night with a nice bottle of moscato frizzante that was shipped in by the owners themselves that was hiding in the dessert section.

An odd choice you might say. However Baby surprised me when she finished nearly half the bottle of wine. Beautifully balanced and aromatic, this surprising moscato has a twist of toast that complements its sweetness. And who can forget the light bubbles that makes every girl all giggly….. “Thumbs Up”! An up-lifting start with sweet endings.

Then came our starter…….

A traditional dish of lightly grilled thin slices of eggplant till almost caramelized, covered by layers mozzarella cheese and pomodori sauce that’s elegantly arranged and presented. Who would have thought that a peasant’s recipe could get baby, a picky vegetable eater, to eat her vegetables?! (other than caesar salads that is). A dish that carries the warmth of an Italian home to your palate. “Two Thumbs Up”.

The main course.

The main attraction of this place is its Sassorosso pizza. The pizza that made Baby pick Sassorosso in the first place. The escargot pizza as I would call it. Shocking……. yes….. Delicious?!?! Very debatable; but I will say this it is an acquired taste to like this dish and given it’s taste, texture, presentation and combination of condiments and spices I will still give it thumbs up for this creative, daring dish.

A anniversary dinner wouldn’t be complete without dessert.

Yes, it’s a warm, beautifully decorated chocolate flan that we shared. Just enough to complete our celebration. It’s dessert. What can go wrong when you have chocolate mixed in soft melt-in-your-mouth flan? A sommelier to wait on you to boot.

Sassorosso is definitely the place that I would recommend for those who are looking for that difference in their meal.

We have our first kiss anniversary; our “when we started out” anniversary; our replacement anniversary, our good luck anniversary…. well I’m sure you the drift. Without fail our celebrations almost would involve food. New restaurants, pubs, cafe’s and places that I don’t know how to categorize. So here I dedicate this blog to our tummies’ joy and indulgence in the art of food and beverage that we’ve mostly enjoyed and may you find yours in this blog……
